Who provides OpenQR

OpenQR is an open-source QR code generator run as a sole trader in the United Kingdom, hosted at openqr.uk. These terms apply to the hosted service (the generator at openqr.uk, optional accounts, dynamic codes, the REST and MCP APIs, and Pro subscriptions) and to your use of this website. The generator code itself is free software under the AGPL-3.0 licence, and nothing in these terms restricts the rights that licence gives you over the code.

The free generator

The core generator runs entirely in your browser. Your QR content is never uploaded, accounts are optional, exports carry no watermark, and static codes never expire. It is provided free of charge, and we don't ask for payment details for it.

Accounts and dynamic codes

Optional features — editable dynamic codes, scan analytics, the dashboard, the REST API and the MCP server — need a free account. You sign in with a one-tap link or Google sent to an email address you control, and you keep that address working while you have an account. You are responsible for the codes you create and for the destinations they point to.

The free plan includes 3 active dynamic codes, kept for as long as you have the account — they are not reset monthly. Scans are unlimited on every planand are never metered. The free plan's scan analytics are limited to the most recent 7 days by country.

Pro subscriptions and billing

Pro adds unlimited dynamic codes and full scan analytics (towns and regions, device and referrer breakdowns, CSV export, full history), a branded short-link subdomain, and PIN or password-protected codes. Pro costs £9/month or £72/year, billed in advance through Stripe. We never see or store your card details.

You can cancel at any time from the dashboard; cancellation stops future charges. Nothing is deleted when a subscription ends: your codes, designs and scan history stay in place, analytics narrow back to the free window, and dynamic codes above the free plan's 3-code limit are paused, not killed (your most-scanned codes stay live, and re-subscribing restores the rest automatically). If a payment fails, we retry it and your subscription keeps its benefits during the retry window rather than cutting off printed codes.

We may change Pro pricing with at least 30 days' notice by email or a notice in the dashboard; the change applies from your next renewal, and cancelling before then avoids it.

Acceptable use

You agree not to use OpenQR to create or point codes at anything unlawful or harmful, including:

  • phishing, fraud, malware, or content that impersonates another person or business;
  • material that is illegal in the UK, or that infringes someone else's rights;
  • sending scanners to destinations they were misled into expecting, or to anything a scanner could not have consented to;
  • abusing the service itself: circumventing rate limits, reselling the hosted API as your own, or attacking our infrastructure.

We validate destinations for safety (public web addresses only; private and internal networks are rejected) and may check them against third-party reputation services. If a code breaks these terms, we may pause or disable it. Where the code is paused for abuse we will tell you, and you can delete it or fix the problem; account deletion is always available to you from the dashboard.

Your content

Your destinations, labels, designs and tags are yours. You grant us only the limited right to store and process them to operate the service (for example, to redirect a dynamic code to its destination). Scan data belongs to you as an aggregate picture of your codes' usage; it is collected under the k-anonymity rules described in our privacy policy and is never sold.

Availability and support

We work hard to keep dynamic codes resolving (they are monitored continuously), but the service is provided “as is” without a contractual uptime guarantee. Static codes, which never touch our servers, keep working regardless of what happens to the hosted service.

Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, OpenQR is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the greater of £100 or the amount you paid us in the 12 months before it arose. Nothing in these terms limits liability for anything that cannot lawfully be limited (such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud). Your statutory rights as a consumer are unaffected.

Ending the agreement

You can stop using OpenQR and delete your account at any time from the dashboard; deletion is permanent and removes your codes, keys, folders and analytics. We may suspend accounts or individual codes that breach these terms, with notice where that is lawful and proportionate.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service evolves. Material changes will be announced by email or a notice in the dashboard at least 14 days before they take effect; continuing to use the service after that means you accept them. The current version always lives on this page.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. If you have a problem, contact us first — we'd rather fix it.
