How a call QR code works

The code stores a standard tel: link, which every modern phone understands. Point the camera at it on iPhone (iOS 11+) or Android (10+) and tap the prompt to call. Because the number is encoded directly, the code works forever, offline, with nothing to expire. Need something editable? A dynamic code can only point at an http(s) page, so the route is a dynamic URL code aimed at a contact page that carries your number.

Always include the country code

The code stores whatever you type after tel:, character for character, with no reformatting. Type +44 7000 000000 and that’s exactly what a scanning phone dials. Drop the + and a phone that isn’t set to the UK (a visitor’s, or one roaming) may read it as a local number and fail to place the call. The leading + tells any dialler to treat the rest as a complete international number. Include it even for an all-UK audience: it is also how a UK number dials correctly from a roaming phone.

Phone code, SMS code or WhatsApp link?

All three start from the same number, but they encode differently and open something different on the other end. A WhatsApp code strips everything except the digits from what you type, so spaces and dashes there don’t matter the way they do for a phone code.

No dialler on the device

A tablet or a laptop camera reads the same code, but with no dialler to hand off to, tapping the result does nothing useful: depending on the device you get an error, or an offer to place the call through a video-calling app instead.
