A change to free-plan editable codes

By OpenQR · updated 7 November 2026

OpenQR is changing one thing about the free plan. From 7 November 2026, changing where a dynamic QR code points, so a printed code can be repointed without reprinting it, is part of the Starter plan (£25/year, which also includes three editable codes and a 30-day scan-history window). Everything else stays as it was, and no code you have already printed is affected.

What doesn't change

Every code you have already printed keeps working forever. Dynamic codes keep redirecting to wherever they point today, scans keep being counted, and scan analytics keep updating on the free plan, with no time limit and no expiry. That has been OpenQR's promise since the beginning and this change does not touch it.

  • Unlimited static codes, free, no account needed, as always.
  • Unlimited scans on every plan; scans are never metered.
  • One live dynamic code on the free plan, free to create, live forever.
  • Labels, designs, tags, folders, pausing and downloads all stay free.
  • The REST API and MCP server stay free for everyone.
  • No ads: your scanners will never see an interstitial, a countdown or a consent wall from us.

What changes

One action moves behind the paywall: changing the destination of a dynamic code. If your menu changes, your listing moves or your campaign ends, updating where the printed code points is what Starter (and every plan above it) includes. The free plan's code keeps working exactly as printed; you just can't repoint it without a plan. The rest of this market already runs this way. The differences are the price (£25 a year, not $10 a month) and what your scanners see: our codes never carry ads or watermarks.

If you already hold several dynamic codes on a free account, they are unaffected: each keeps pointing where it points today, forever.

Our promise if we change course

We are running this as a dated experiment, not a settled decision. If we change course, destination editing reopens on the free plan automatically: no action needed from you, no code of yours changes state, and we will say so here with a date. Accounts are never penalised for waiting.

Why

A dynamic code is a redirect we host for as long as the print exists, and every edit is a live change to that redirect. Editing is where the running cost sits, so editing is what the paid plans fund. The generator, static codes, scans and the API cost almost nothing at the margin and stay free accordingly; the cost breakdown behind that hasn't changed.
